This morning at precisely 3:34 A.M., an earthquake struck Feidong County in Hefei, Anhui, China. With a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale, the earthquake’s epicenter was 10 kilometers underground at 31.34 degrees north latitude and 117.626 degrees east longitude. Aftershocks are common following an earthquake so precautions should be taken.

Impact

Thus far, the event has been determined to be a shallow earthquake, close to the surface of the earth. According to a report from the Ministry of Emergency Management, the tremor had a maximum intensity of five on the China Seismic Intensity Scale. The earthquake was felt across the province of Anhui and beyond, including in the provincial capital of Hefei, which has a population of more than 8 million people. There have been no reports of casualties or major damage but several houses have sustained minor cracks. Authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage.
