The Yankees Trade Trey Sweeney to the Dodgers
Yankees Trade Sweeney for Gonzalez and Another Player
The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly close to a deal that would send shortstop prospect Trey Sweeney to the Dodgers in exchange for reliever Victor Gonzalez and another player, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Sweeney Struggled in 2022
Sweeney, 20, was the Yankees' first-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. He struggled in his first full season in the minors in 2022, batting .219 with a .638 OPS in 110 games at High-A Hudson Valley.
Gonzalez a Valuable Reliever
Gonzalez, 27, is a left-handed reliever who has pitched for the Dodgers since 2020. He has a 3.56 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP in 109 career appearances.
Yankees Free Up Roster Space
The Yankees are looking to free up some space on their 40-man roster, which is currently full. Sweeney was not expected to be ready for the majors until 2024 at the earliest.
Dodgers Add Depth to Shortstop Position
The Dodgers are adding depth to their shortstop position with Sweeney. He will likely start the season in Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Trade Benefits Both Teams
The trade is a good move for both teams. The Yankees get a valuable reliever in Gonzalez, while the Dodgers add a promising young shortstop prospect in Sweeney.
